General transferable skills: University of Bristol

(Transcript of a section of the General transferable skills report, 1998)

Skills that students learn are generic and whilst learned in a legal context are applicable to other disciplines. The formats of skills and general teaching are developed within each individual core unit to reflect the opportunities presented by each topic. Emphasis is placed upon providing students with academic legal skills rather than profession specific ones.

Consideration is given throughout the degree programme to skills such as problem-solving, communication and group work. Skills are integrated into substantive law subjects and developed within many of the traditional methods of teaching, for example through tutorial and seminar presentations.

Communication skills are also developed through optional mooting and client counseling sessions. Simulated exercises including disputes are discussed in tutorials.

The Department is working with University of the West of England and Southampton Institute of Higher Education to develop self assessment tools to help students develop the skills based element of their learning.
